Von Stade Shines In Oberlin Recital With Modern Works
New Jersey born mezzo Frederica Von Stade closed Oberlin College’s Artist Recital Series with a versatile program. She offered Roger Nelson’s world premiere Jimmy Jet And His Television Set and moved deftly between classical and modern American songs, showing dramatic variety and comic gift. Her accompanist Marten Katz excelled in the demanding piano parts, while some Mahler and Ravel songs revealed occasional slips in phrasing and tone. The program showcased six language performances and a lighthearted end with French Auvergne canteloub pieces and humorous songs.
