New Westlake hospital overcomes demand in first month
Officials at St John and West Shore Hospital report strong patient volume in six weeks of operation. Of 200 beds, 111 are in use as demand prompts faster bed openings and hiring. The emergency room treated 1,100 patients in the first month and more than 500 stayed in hospital rooms, including 65 births. TwWTSes total about 525 staff, with about half nurses, and hiring continues despite no nursing shortage. The joint medical staff with St John Cleveland operates under a single chain of command, with potential issues if boards differ on decisions. Management will decide by summer whether to keep the one staff model. Most patients currently come from Bay Village, Westlake, North Olmsted and eastern Lorain County.
