Amherst to Swear In Woman as Police Lieutenant
AMHERST The city's 11 member police department will promote Sgt Barbara Cowger to lieutenant next week making her the sole woman in the force to hold the rank. Cowger 33 has served since 1876 and was a sergeant since 1979 after scoring higher on a civil service exam than Sgt Lennie Dillon. City officials plan to post an eligibility list for testing soon and conduct testing April 25 to hire four officers to reach the authorized size of 13. City Council in January set the department size and overrode a veto on legislation.
