Milt Hawkins owner of Milt's TV service announces carrying Audiovox radios and sound gear for cars. The shop at 156 Central Avenue Shafter recently remodeled with a suspended ceiling and new panels. Hours are 8 am to 6 pm weekdays and 8 am to noon Saturdays.
Fifty four Biola College students and four professors from La Mirada California prepare for a six week relief trip to refugee camps in Southeast Asia. The group will perform medical and nutritional assessments and provide immunizations while also addressing social and spiritual needs.
Congressman's staff will visit Shafter on Tuesday July 29 to meet citizens with federally related problems and gather input. Office hours run 9 to 11 a.m. at Shafter City Hall 320 James Street with staff offering help on Social Security and Veterans payments.
Shafter police disclosed a quiet week with several arrests. Billy Lane of Shafter was jailed after resisting Officer Jon McLaren at Village Apartments on Kern Street, charged with public drunkenness and battery on an officer. Public Works Director Lew Carroll announced that in the first week of August reclamite road oil will be applied to several Shafter streets, followed by sanding. The oil is water soluble and should wash off cars in time, with diesel fuel and solvent as a cleanup option if needed. The program aims to extend street life by five to seven years.
