Elconin objects to removal from Shafter cases

Western Municipal Court Judge Milton Elconin filed a declaration in Superior Court on July 18 opposing a writ by the District Attorney's office to remove him from Shafter cases. He cites threats of violence and claims about a pressure that he would face if he appeared in Shafter, with denial from District Attorney Al Leddy and Chief Gene Kaplan.

Shuttle Offers Free Rides Before Shafter Launch

The Shafter Shuttle provides free rides to residents on Thursday and Friday July 31 and August 1 to preview the new bus system ahead of its August 4 start. It covers many city streets with stops marked by Bus Stop stencils, operating 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular service begins August 4, fares 50 cents, senior and handicap accommodations available. another route planned with Kern County for outlying areas by fall.

Elconin Boycott Expands to District Attorney Office

The dispute involving West Kern Municipal Court Judge Milton A. Elconin and Shafter Police Chief Gene Kaplan grew last week to cover the Kern County District Attorney's Office and the County Council's Office.

District Attorney and Judge End Feud Over Shafter Case

The feud between Kern County District Attorney Al Leddy and Superior Court Judge Milton Elconin subsided when Elconin agreed to withdraw remarks about the DA and his office. An accord announced for July 28 said the Grand Jury would probe the Shafter Police Department and Elconin would retire his accusations. Local officials welcomed an independent review and pledged public results.

Burial costs rise at local cemetery district

At the July 18 board meeting the district approved September 1 1980 price increases due to higher vault liner equipment and power costs. Lot price climbs from 190 to 215 and full burial service from 450 to 510 after August 31. A time payment pre need option is now available with all payments due before burial. District office handles business for Shafter and Wasco cemeteries. Board includes Ben Grundy Brad Tomasini and Lee Thomas.

Two Kern County Teens Earn California 4-H Diamond Star

Laurie Sapp and Brenda Moore, recent Shafter and South Bakersfield graduates, were named 4-H California Diamond Star recipients for 198? They join 16 others from 125000 4-H members to form the State Diamond Team and will represent 4-H at California events. The honors, presented at Rio Bravo Tennis Ranch with plaques from Mary Grider and Hodge Black, mark a decade since Kern County last produced a Diamond Star.
