Polk Village approves 1949 tax levy and expense estimate

The Village of Polk Nebraska adopts an expenditure estimate totaling 27 722 82 for the year ending April 30 1949 with allocations for General and Incidental Purposes 1900 Street Lighting 700 Library 300 Fire Protection 350 Park and Amusements 250 Auditorium Maintenance 350 and other items The board sets July 5 1949 at 8 00 PM in the Fire Hall to pass the Annual Appropriation Bill The statements are signed by Chairman Marvin Fredrickson and Clerk Eldon Johnson with publication planned in Polk Progress for four weeks on June 9 16 23 and 30.

Student Uses Sand Camouflage To Capture Duck Hawk

Cornell ornithology student Heinz Meng explains a method tested on Maryland beaches to lure a duck hawk with a buried sand concealment and pigeon bait. The hawk dived and clamped, Meng grabbed the bird with minor injuries, noting permits required and hawk’s generally beneficial role.

The two winning hybrid teas are Forty-Niner and Tallyho. Both scored near perfect in 18 test gardens and show strong adaptability. Forty-Niner features a rich yellow outside with red inner petals and cherry red aging center. Tallyho displays weather dependent bicoloring from crimson outside to pink inner shades.

Local visitors and hospital stays noted in Hampton area

Mr and Mrs Karl Detloff visited the Rhine Klute home in Hampton Tuesday. Detloff fell ill and was hospitalized in York from Tuesday to Thursday before returning home to Polk. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Charles Smith of Los Angeles and Mrs Ed Larson. Several socials and family visits occurred, with hospital convalescence for Nellie Peterson at home with her son and daughter-in-law Ben and Mrs. Peterson. Vincent Horn of Gordon and Will Green hosted gatherings, and Fortis Fitting with baby joined the Green home visitinaries.
