First Grade Calendar and Listening Skills Begin February
First graders fill February calendar and learn days of the week and months. They start the SRA Listening Skill Builder program focusing on comprehension recall and time sequence. Students listen to stories and answer questions then self assess with teacher guidance and graphs. Douglas Kingston joins the class from Girand Island. Eight girls and five boys in the room. Polio Drive Nets 155.50 From Two Precincts
In January the East and West Pleasant Home precincts reported 63 solicitors covering 142 homes for the polio drive. Total contributions reached 155 dollars and 50 cents. County chair Mrs Donald Rystrom and precinct chair Mrs Irvin Anderson thanked volunteers including Mrs Lloyd Widga and Alvin Dahlin. Special thanks went to Country Woman's Club, American Legion Auxiliary and Emmanuel Lutheran Ladies Aid for support. Mary Anneta Colby born May 17 1898 near Benedict Nebraska married thrice to John Gustafson Elmer Anderson and lived in South Dakota Polk Kansas and California She left behind her husband Elmer two stepchildren Eugene Anderson and Dorris Jones 23 grandchildren 10 step grandchildren 7 great grandchildren plus many relatives including siblings and a host of friends. She died February 5 after long illness and hospital care in Salina Kansas.

Feed Grain Program Sign Up Attracts County Farmers
The Polk County ASCS office reports heavy sign ups for the 1968 wheat and feed grain programs starting February 5. In the first five days, 350 feed grain farms and 335 wheat farms completed agreements. To qualify for payments, producers must sign an intention to participate and divert at least 20 percent of their feed grain base, with optional 50 percent diversion for extra payments. Wheat requires an intention to participate and planting for harvest within the wheat allotment. Sign up ends March 15.

The American Legion Auxiliary met in the Legion Hall on Monday February 12. Anna Eisler led the business session and a poem about Abraham Lincoln was read. The group sponsored an Americanism essay issued $5 to Radio Free Europe $2 to Seminar and voted on Girls State candidates. Elaine Miller reported Heart Fund progress and Elaine Stromberg read on the American flag.
