Prices higher for land in Nebraska

Lincoln Cal Ward regional head for the resettlement administration says 98 percent of options for 1 971 685 acres in Nebraska North and South Dakota have been accepted. The RA will buy 180 281 acres in Nebraska for 1 277 000 and 836 659 acres in South Dakota for 3 620 000. Adaptation includes grazing to prevent erosion and timber and fire prevention work in Pine Ridge Cheyenne River and Fort Sully projects.

Demand for Midwest farmland rises at Federal Land Bank Omaha

The Federal Land Bank of Omaha reports a 50 percent rise in farm and ranch sales across Nebraska Iowa South Dakota and Wyoming in the first ten months of 1936 compared with 1935. Prices are 15 to 20 percent higher than two years ago with more than 2.4 million dollars paid for 416 properties. Nebraska led with a 150 percent gain followed by Iowa 50 South Dakota 22 and Wyoming 4. Young farmers show strongest interest despite rainfall and drought fears.

Lincoln Nebr to plant 50 million trees yearly for 50 years

Lincoln forestry chief urges Nebraska to plant at least 50 million trees each year for five decades to offset drought losses. He notes 1936 drought killed about 20 percent of state trees and three dry years harmed ornamental plantings. care and older roots complicate recovery.

Power Start Planned by Platte Valley District

R H Willis Nebraska irrigation chief said Platte Valley public power and irrigation district in North Platte will start generating power December 1. D D Price, project manager, advised the date. The district will be Nebraska’s first large PWA financed hydro electric district to begin operations with grants and loans totaling over 10 million dollars. North Platte will be the first customer on the line.

Potato Shipments Lag As Fall Harvest Shrinks

Lincoln area potato updates show shipments this fall at 79 percent of last year while the crop totals 5,350,000 bushels. Through the period 1,436 cars have been shipped to date versus 1,809 a year ago, with much of the harvest from commercial irrigated regions.

Farm Income Rises. Nebraska Farmers Lead Septembers

Nebraska farmers earned 22.986 million dollars in cash income from principal farm products and benefits in September, up 205 thousand from a year ago. Dr. T H Gooding, director at the agricultural college, notes four states will send farm boys to the university’s four month operator’s short course. He received 35 applications from first time enrollees.

The Bureau of Public Roads reports Nebraska spent 10,379,000 on highways in 1935, with receipts totaling 9,975,000. Nebraska ranks low in both income and expenditure for the year, while Pennsylvania tops income at 63,465,000 and outlay at 45,972,200. New York shows 57,187,000 received and 54,770,000 spent.

State Planning Board to Map Six Year Public Works Plan

State Engineer A C Tilley announced a statewide survey by the state planning board to catalog desirable public works for a six year program. Officials will report projects for construction, the survey feeding a national resources board report. A 1935 inventory valued at $81,000,000 guided WPA and PWA projects then underway or completed.

Nebraska to Receive PWA Funds for 34 Projects

Since August 1 the Public Works Administration has allotted 2,667,425 in grants and 1,7227,500 in loans for 34 Nebraska projects. Six projects require loans led by 916,000 for North Loup irrigation ditches and rural electrification, and 765,000 for Middle Loup works. Top grants include 749,000 to North Loup, 625,000 to Middle Loup, 414,000 to Omaha Municipal University, 180,000 for a Nebraska University student activities building, and 101,300 for a McCook transmission line. Other projects receive under 100,000.

Nebraska WPA Orders Major Layoffs Across State

WPA officials from every region of Nebraska were told by D F Felton state WPA administrator to cut job rolls from 30 000 to 15 000 by December 15 due to dwindling federal funds. About 10 000 farmers on drought relief and 5 000 on regular WPA rolls will be removed, with needy farmers directed to the resettlement administration for aid.

Six More Surveyors Join Burwell Substation Project

The North Loop power and irrigation district adds six surveyors and opens a Burwell substation. GM Dimmire targets three to four local workers under R H Armstrong for river soundings and gauging at Taylor Ord North Loup Scotia. Land-rights for Ord-North Loop canal nearly settled. one owner refuses options, others proceeding. Construction to start soon.

VFW District backs $100,000 forestry station aid

Ninth district officers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars endorsed a proposed $100,000 appropriation by Congress for a Nebraska City experimental forestry station. They voted to aid the Forestry Department in securing the federal funds for purchase and maintenance of the station sponsored by the Nebraska VFW department.
