Set aside farm program aims to direct crops to best areas
The 1971 set aside plan lets growers allocate a fixed cropland share to soil conserving uses and plant the rest to any crop except sugar cane and quota crops. Experts say this will concentrate corn in the Corn Belt, small grains in the Great Plains, soybeans in the Southeast, and cotton where efficient. The shift aims to cut costs and boost efficiency as farms trend toward fewer, larger operations.
