Moonlighting manager tied to state horse shows and trophies

Allen Ross a state employee and Santa Barbara District Fair manager used his office and phone to promote a private trophies business. He also managed nine outside horse shows, with potential unbid trophy purchases and repeated use of the same judges and vendors.

Ten County Road Projects May Be Cut In Budget Rethink

County Road Commissioner Leland Steward warned supervisors that 10 road projects totaling 470000 for 1973 74 would be shelved if 50 percent of traffic fines and forfeitures are kept for the general fund Administrative Officer Raymond D Johnson urged continuing the policy The affected projects include Cathedral Oaks Rd Bradley Rd Ortega Hill Rd Calle Real and several overlays and widenings with district breakdowns totaling 200267 in Second Third districts 115902 in Fifth district 100674 in Fourth district and 53157 in First district.

Return of POW Southwick Revered by Family at Travis

Navy Commander Charles E Southwick arrived at Travis Air Force Base at 2 25 p m March 7 1973 after six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. His father in law Earle Sweetland recalled the emotional reunion with Karen Southwick and their family. Southwick spoke of adjusting to life in the United States and hopes to resume flying and complete a 30 year Navy career.

Former POW hopes to visit grave of comrades in arms

Houston Marine Ronald Ridgeway, wounded in 1968 ambush near Khe Sanh, seeks to visit the grave near Jefferson Barracks where seven fellow soldiers are buried. Ridgeway was later listed as a POW and returned in Operation Homecoming's third phase. Other POWs discuss release plans and memories.

Museum sponsors Project 2000 model contest

The Lompoc Museum announces a community contest for all ages to submit models depicting ideas usable by 2000 but not yet invented. Cash prizes include 10, 5, five 1 dollar prizes, plus certificates. Entries due December 31, 1973 from a $500 Gauss Scientific Society trust fund. Ideas on gravity receive an extra certificate.
