February CPI shows 22 year cost of living jump led by food
The February Consumer Price Index rose 0.8 percent after seasonal adjustment led by a 2.4 percent food price surge at grocery stores. Meat poultry and fish jumped 5 percent, the largest since June 1965, driving most of the year’s inflation signals while officials consider wage price controls and the voluntary Phase III approach.

Train Worker Rescued After Surf Rescue Aircrewmen Helped
A railroad foreman Richard Dumar from Fontana was pulled from near freezing surf at Ocean Park near Surf along with two Air Force helicopter crewmen Capt David Berger and Lt Patrick Miles after a plane crash during a rescue attempt. The rescue began after 9 30 a m when Gilbert Luna radioed for help and Roy Magee SP agent reported the incident. Dumar fell from the Santa Ynez River mouth and was swept seaward by a strong current.
