High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - June 23, 1974, High Point, North Carolina Let s talk homosexuality is big problem a a my child it a homosexual. Several parents have said to me recently they tend to feel that their problem is unique that they Are the Only ones who Are expert Enrina the Hurt of such a discovery of there is any Comfort in the old axion misery loves company this it one of the real growing concerns of our society statistics in this area Art about As unreliable As in the area of drug abuse nobody knows How Many homosexuals there Are in this country but the general feeling among professionals i that the number is great and rapidly increasing it is becoming a much More accepted practice through the efforts of the Cay liberation movement Fiven some of the National churches arc accepting ministers who openly proclaim they Are practising homosexuals while t must admit that i am glad to see a trend assay from the it scotus attitudes widely held toward homosexuals i must join the ranks of those who do not accept the practice As a Normal of this identifies me As As a old fashioned then so be in in every Case of homosexuality i have worked with the practice represents a failure to relate to the opposite sex to a rewarding and fulfilling Way such a failure to relate to anyone cannot be taken lightly. In Short it of a a copy of course the homosexual will Seldom admit to himself or herself it that the practice represents a failure a i m just admitting Arhat i am a i have been told by several homosexuals some go even further and suggest that if society would just accept the practice there would be no problem because the problem is Only imaginary that s a Little like the married Man who recently told me his wife was frigid a and that since he had sexual he had no Choice but to seek satisfaction outside of marriage. As we talked it became apparent to both of us that his wife Slack of sexual motivation was due to their Lousy relationship w hat the homosexual tends to Overlook is that men and women have needs for each other that Are far greater than those we have traditionally called sexual. To accept anything less than a deep and intimate relationship with a person of the opposite sex is to Settle to be Only half a human society has begun to say to the homosexual that he does not need help in fact there is widespread belief that the homosexual cannot be helped the truth is that he ran be helped my healed completely. Any parents confronted with such a Challenge should not Settle for less a no matter what a a sophisticated morality the big problem comes from the fact that in order to be helped the homosexual must want help Many parents of homosexuals feel so crushed ashamed and helpless that All they can do is react or remain depressed first i would suggest i depth counselling for lither and Mother As to their own attitudes concerning their own sexual relationship this can be done by a competent minister or professional family counsellor flaws in their relationship could be dealt with before they set about to Deal with a homosexual child secondly find a Way to express acceptance of the person while rejecting the practice open honest and Loving communication is a great help it saying a i love you while saying a i reject your practice 1 thirdly focus attention on relationships rather than on practices parents can be a lot of help to enabling a Young person to work through inner conflicts that cripple him in hts efforts to reach out to others fourthly hold your ground f firmly but Don t preach to the person of he is not feeling guilty you can to make him see that he is wrong by condemning him of the person is feeling guilty you stand Only to make him defensive by constantly badgering him about it. Offer professional help but Den push it. Done to close a door be May someday want to walk through finally creatively Pray and ride to out some of us approach the matter of prayer As if it were a feeble attempt at something one i step removed from doing nothing. Prayer is the j greatest Force in the world it i can do More than All the psychiatrists and counsellors put together it May take a Long time but done to give up Hope one note sometimes when i we Pray for someone it looks j As if the Bottom has fallen out. Desperation May be the j first step in recovery. Trust god to work it out All the Way through squad wins rest Stop squabble by Lee Mortimer Enterprise staff writer Thomasville the Thomasville Rescue squad has received permission from the state Highway department to Post Holiday a safety rest Stop signs during the fourth of july Holiday period. The Rescue squad will operate a Holiday rest Stop for Motorist to be located off the ramp at the intersection of 1-85 and . 109 there is no charge for refreshments served but the squad does ask a Small contribution to help defray the costs. The decision marked a conclusion in a two year on again off again policy under which the state has granted and then rescinded permission for the signs to be erected on the Highway right of Way. The controversy began during the 1972 fourth of july period when the squad was ordered to take Down rest Stop signs and close Down its rest Stop in the Middle of the Holiday period. During labor Day of that year the rest Stop was reopened but with the signs placed farther Back from the Highway. Apparently the signs could kit to be seen by motorists because squad members reported a Sharp drop in the number of people who stopped at the rest Stop in april 1973, the greater Greensboro open Golf tournament was granted permission to erect directional signs along the interstate Highway. Rescue squad president Larry Murdock successfully prevailed upon the governor s office for similar permission for the squad to operate the rest area for the 1973 july 4 Holiday. But permission for the upcoming Holiday period was denied the squad by transportation Board representative Henry Clegg who said a Board Resolution denied sign erection along the Highway right of Way. Then Murdock Learned from state representative Bill Lang that that Resolution had been rescinded As of june 13. Lang said he got his information from transportation Board member Robert Vaughn of High Point. Shop monday thursday Friday nights til 9 High pm a in. Jewe Al 1974 3a a a a monday and tuesday Only.
