High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - August 26, 1976, High Point, North Carolina 20 per cent in two years teachers to seek pay hike Raleigh apr the North Carolina association of educators Nae has committed itself to asking the general Assembly for a 20 per cent pay raise in the 1977-79 biennium and the state Board of education May take a similar action. Dawson executive Secretary of the Nae said wednesday that his organization would seek a to per cent pay increase for teachers effective july i 1977, followed by another to per cent the following july i. He described the request As reasonable and said such an increase would make up for the rising Cost of living in recent years the state Board of education was to consider a similar pay increase request today As it begins reviewing spending proposals submitted for possible inclusion in the boards budget request of the legislature. A. Craig Phillips superintendent of Public instruction said the plan was a a responsible reasonable salary request. If that increase were granted state budget officials estimated that it would Cost the state $240 million in the two year period. In 1975, the state Board of education asked the legislature for a20 per cent pay raise for teachers during the 1975-77 biennium. State revenues were below expectations forcing the general Assembly to make drastic budget cuts. Teachers and state workers were not granted a pay raise july i 1975, and were Given a raise of $300 a year plus 4 per cent on july i this year.
