Privette Faces Friday Decision On Runoff Bid

Raleigh AP report says Coy Privette, second in the Republican primary, will announce Friday if he seeks a runoff against David Flaherty who led but failed to win a majority. Privette claims pledges and funds for a statewide runoff campaign, naming Wake Durham Mecklenburg and other counties as targets. Flaherty warns a runoff could split the GOP before November, while Privette argues he can widen support among Democrats and unaffiliated voters.

Abortion funds divide Senate and House stalemate

The Senate again rejected a ban on federal funds for abortions while the House backs the amendment to a Labor HEW appropriations bill. The dispute centers on funding 250 000 to 300 000 abortions annually for low income women, costing 40 to 50 million dollars, with veto risks from President Ford. Senate leaders expect a veto. Helms, Bayh, and Brooke defend or oppose the measure as a vote nears.
