Wisconsin conservationists aided Michigan crews in live trapping muskies and pike. Eggs were damaged by cold shipping, leaving none of the muskies surviving. 5 000 fingerlings from pike were planted in state lakes. Next spring the muskellunge program continues with better gear, nets, and lessons from 1954.
No forest fires were reported to the state conservation department last week. To date this year 982 fires burned about 3600 acres, well below 1951's all time low of 4491 acres. General rains reduced the fire hazard. the week was the first perfect period since the season began. Reports cover Michigan lands except federal forest acreage.
Michigan's state park system readies for winter by storing summer gear and closing facilities. Managers also prepare winter equipment for hunters, skiers, and others who use public lands during the cold months.
The conservation department lauds public cooperation in preventing forest fires with only 3564 acres burned by mid September, far below 1940s levels. Officials cite improved equipment, four wheel drive water tanks, metal piping, short wave radios and better trained crews as key factors alongside public vigilance.
About 17 000 applications were received four days before the October 10 deadline. The total trails 64 000 short of the 81 000 permits available as the deadline nears. Late applicants are likely to receive permits. Permit holders may shoot any deer in three northern Flower Peninsula areas on December 1.
Mrs. Sam Gaskill hosted and guests included Mr. and Mrs. David Cook and family. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davis visited the Lucias and were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Pence of Marion. Dr. John Boehn called from West Branch while Bert Landers visited the Gaskills. Wilma Cunningham dropped by her grandmother, and Ernest Kennedy and family were weekend callers at Jim and Lawrence Dunns.
Mr and Mrs Sam Gaskill hosted a birthday gathering Saturday night at daughter and son in law Mrs Wilfred Landers home. The occasion marked their granddaughter turning nine as Grandma Landers baked a pretty cake and guests brought gifts.
