Isabella County Gleaners celebrated their 60th anniversary Friday in Mt. Pleasant. President Orville Klimypp opened the meeting as Clyde Showalter spoke on the early history. Members honored included eight who served fifty years or more. A pot luck lunch and anniversary cake followed with entertainment by local groups and soloists. The next county meeting is set for January 14 at the I O C F Hall with officer elections on the agenda.

Joe Grieware of Lake is named Clare county chairman of the United Health and Welfare Fund. Hart Morgan of Clare announces the county appointment this week.
The Highland Gun Club held its first championship shoot on Sunday October 17 with 35 competitors in three classes. Glen Cain won the club championship large trophy, Jerry Nivison second, Al Nystrom third. Don Rosenfield won class B trophy with Les Bonstelle second. Jim Grover won class C trophy with Dr. Gershon second. The club announces its annual ham and turkey shoot on October 31 at 9:30, public invited.
About 300 teachers from Clare and Isabella counties will take a one day institute on October 22 starting at Clare High School. The 60 mile tour includes oil fields wildlife management and soil conservation demonstrations guided by experts from Michigan State College Central Michigan College and state agencies. Lunch will be at a roadside park north of Clare with return around 3 30 p m.
Music fills Clare Public School as elementary rooms display song notes and autumn color posters. Second and third graders under Mrs. Garthe sing Autumn Song from front wall, with Knoeller’s class featuring Day Dreaming and The Humming Bird posters.
Mt Pleasant spoiled Clare High School junior varsity 18 game win streak on a muddy field. Clare's Jim Nivison scored on a third quarter sneak and Dick Roe added a 50 yard TD. Coach Robert Baker praised effort but noted needed tougher blocking for upcoming games. Jayvees travel to St. Louis for a 4 PM game.
Clare County Pomona Grange will meet on Tuesday October 26 with Greenwood Grange to conduct joint sessions and discuss local agricultural and community concerns.
The Clare High fourth annual homecoming festivities begin with queen candidate elections. Nancy Randall Bonnie Stanley Gloria Milhella Phyllis Bolin Lois Pudway Marilyn Brown named attendees. Pictures of candidates will be shown at Clare Furniture Store with tickets on sale starting October 23.

Police suspect multiple burglars and note partial insurance coverage.

About 180 parents and teachers attended Clare Public open house on Monday evening October 18. Superintendent T C Campbell praised the turnout noting ten times more men than usual attended and tours of labs and vocational rooms were given by teachers. Parents met teachers in grade school classrooms, conferences were held, and a plan to place report cards in the first three grades was discussed. PT A president Mrs John Wicklund introduced Campbell and a brief meeting selected committees for the year.
The Clare Pioneers beat Durand 13 to 6 in a rain soaked mud game on Friday night. Oscar Rulapaugh and Clark Kin Sey led a 60 yard drive for the opening score and Kyle Hanley’s interception set up the second. Nard Robinette starred at linebacker as Clare prepares to face Ithaca next Friday in Clare.
The Clare City Library Association held its annual meeting to elect officers for the coming year. New books across fiction non fiction and children's sections were announced alongside plans to renew the Saturday story hour. Health hours listed and National Book Week invites were extended with the slogan Lets Read.

At Fall Achievement Night October 11 in Mt. Pleasant two new members joined the Isabella County 4-H Council. Harold Anderson of Rosebush and Dale Zingery of Mt. Pleasant were chosen for three year terms replacing long time member George Jane of Farwell and outgoing treasurer Mrs. Freeman Sites.
Enumerators for the 1954 Census of Agriculture begin intensive training October 19 at Clare County Court House Harrison Michigan led by Crew Leader Mrs Délla Av Johnsonn and instructors. Training covers forms methods interviews and field practice with prospective enumerators listed including Seaver M Amble Doris Budd Inona Cleveland Winona Davenport Evelyn Gingrich and others.
Robert Tethof, about 22, died Saturday forenoon on M 115 about 18 miles from Clare when his car side swiped a house trailer, vaulted out of control and wrecked. Police say he dozed at the wheel and weather was poor with rain reducing visibility. Body sent to Marion. other vehicle occupants unharmed.
