Steep Hollow Rural Notes Hopeful for Farmers

STEEP HOLLOW, Jan. 20. Several rains this year may help farmers break land early though church services were canceled due to bad weather. Mrs. Cleve Smith and children visited Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Powers and family. Jim Smith of Navasota spent the weekend with his father Cleve Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Worsham visited his mother Mrs. Fannie Worsham. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Tobias spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Tobias, who welcomed a baby boy. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Pyles visited Mrs. B. L. Foster. Luther James of Cross stayed with nieces Mrs. Roy Foster and Mrs. Jim Pyles.

Franks Leaves for Prescott As Mother Dies

R C Franks departed on the noon train for Prescott Arkansas after a telegram from his father stated his mother was dying. The illness had lasted months but the news was unexpected and Bryan friends extend sympathy in his hour of bereavement.

Methodist Woman's Missionary Society Meets in Five Groups

Five Methodist church groups met Monday afternoon at members' homes at 3 o'clock. Group 1 held at Mrs. M. R. Bentley with devotional on Psalm 27 and plans to stop refreshments at meetings. Group 2 gathered at Mrs. H. H. Prager with program on The Sisterhood of Service and pledges for the year. Group 3, led by Mrs. J. E. Covey, reported 65 Bible chapters read and 18 sick visits since last meeting. Group 4 met with Mrs. P. H. Hensarling. C. R. Gardner elected Voice program leader. Group 5, led by Mrs. A. D. Graham, logged 143 chapters read and 22 visits. 13 members attended.

Lawrence appoints election committee for chamber board vote

President John M. Lawrence of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce names an elections committee to canvass a 25 member board election. The committee meets January 26 at 7 PM in the chamber office and all ballots must reach Secretary S. E. Eberstadt by 9 AM Monday. Members: J. H. Todd, F. L. Cavitt, Pat Newton, John Blazek, Jack T. Christian Endeavor Meeting Promotes District Conven­tion

Sunday afternoon the Free Baptist church Christian Endeavorers held a union service in the Sunday school building with Howard Morris Houston district president and Earl Stewart state treasurer. They discussed the Bryan district convention set for March 6 to 8 and heard Mrs. L. O. Wilkerson share experiences from China. Local members spoke, and music was provided by four Texas A M students.

Income tax in a Nut Shell for 1925 filers

Single filers with net income of 1000 dollars or more or gross income of 5000 dollars or more, and married couples with net income of 2500 dollars or more or gross income of 5000 dollars or more must file returns. Filing runs January 1 to March 15, 1925 with the collector of internal revenue in the district of residence. Tax structure includes 2 percent on the first 4000 of net income over exemptions, 4 percent on the next 4000, 6 percent on the balance, plus a surtax on net income over 10000.

The Brazos County Boys and Girls Club reports growth in farmer cooperatives with 1915 to 1923 business rising from 635 million to 2.2 billion dollars.
