Kidnapping suspect points to remains of third person in Ashland

Ashland County authorities said Shawn Grate, jailed on an abduction charge, confessed to killing a woman in June and led detectives to remains at two scenes. One body identified as Stacey Stanley from Greenwich, with other remains found near Mansfield and in Richland County as investigators proceed with further identifications and charges.

Road talks seek 0.28M injection fee to fix county roads

County officials discuss a proposed 0.47 per barrel surcharge tied to a brine injection lease held by CWS Trucking Inc. The plan would yield about 36,000 annually, with a one time 50,000 payment. Estimated repairs on Ladd Ridge, Fisher and Meadowbrook Roads totaled 471,602 from 2013 to 2015. The county may require truckers to use Ladd Ridge and Fisher Roads only. A Tuesday closed door meeting with Maiden, the commissioners, and Saunders will decide the county position.

Walker recalls tense traffic stop and race fears in court

In a Athens County trial Walker, a black man driven by aunt Leisa Strong, described a tense stop by a State Highway Patrol trooper. He said he feared for his safety, cited media portrayals of police shootings, and explained he ran and hid in water to avoid potential harm. The defense sought to challenge the stop, but the judge upheld prior rulings. He faces 2 to 8 years per count with possible merged sentencing after a pre-sentence report.
