Athens postpones new outdoor pool to 2017

Athens Mayor Steve Patterson said the city will use its existing pool for one more summer in 2017 as design work for a new outdoor pool proceeds. The plan envisions a zero depth entry area, toddler pool, splash pad, eight-lane lap pool, diving well and a runout slide near the community center behind solar panels. Costs and indoor options remain undecided with no set timeframe.

Ailes plaque removed from Ohio University building

Former Fox News chief Roger Ailes had his name plaque taken from the Ohio University Radio Technology and Communications Building on Monday night as OU President Rodrick McDavis spoke to the Faculty Senate. The university will also return Ailes’ $500,000 major gift and notes his total OU contributions exceed $600,000.

Michigan man Jelani Walker faces trial in Athens County

Opening arguments mark the first day of a jury trial in Athens County Common Pleas Court for Jelani Walker a 36 year old accused of possessing 285 727 grams of a bath salts chemical and cocaine during a traffic stop near The Plains. Prosecution says the drugs belonged to Walker while the defense contends they did not.

Supreme Court rejects Athens County charter ballot request

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled 6-1 that the proposed Athens County charter cannot appear on the November ballot, a decision also affecting Meigs and Portage counties. The justices backed the election boards and Secretary of State, saying the charters do not meet the required state law powers and duties for county government. The ruling rejects the First Amendment challenge to pre-election charter review.
