Willard teachers keep working as contract undecided

Willard City Schools teachers continue to work without a new contract as the board and the Willard Education Association discuss at the October meeting. union representative Chris Neher urged continued bargaining and settlement talks. Superintendent Jeff Ritz announced a joint grant application with Norwalk City Schools for a Straight A's Grant, targeting a $5 to $10 million project split between districts. If not awarded, feedback will guide resubmission in June. Focus remains on elementary grades K through 6 and lottery funds cannot fund preschool. The board approved additional employment: Peggy Opatken as Power of the Pen advisor, Shannon King as Sophomore class advisor, and Brian Strayer as Seventh See Teachers on Page 6-A.

North Fairfield to raise water rates for debt, upgrades

The North Fairfield Village Council gave first reading to an ordinance raising water service fees amid years without rate hikes. The minimum charge becomes 33 per quarter for 6,000 gallons, 8.05 for 7,500 gallons, with 10 percent late fees and due dates to be clarified.

Willard hydrant flushing set for October 21 23

The City of Willard will conduct routine hydrant flushing in and around the city on October 21 22 and 23. Flushing aims to clear sediment from water lines and customers are advised not to wash clothes during the times of flushing to avoid staining.

Willard Schools Lose Phone Service for Days

Willard City Schools will go offline with phones and fiber network starting Thursday at about 3 p.m. while Time Warner runs new fiber for demolition of Willard Middle School after turnover to the contractor. Superintendent Jeff Ritz said phones and computers will be unavailable Thursday afternoon through Friday and not over the weekend, with a plan to restore Monday. Pre-paid cell phones will be issued to each building and numbers shared.

Bylaws Seen as Keeping Library Trustees Diverse

Extension Library District of Huron County trustees support current bylaws while considering amendments to include representatives from South Central and Western Reserve school districts. Director Laura Lee Wilson notes the seven member board majority should come from Willard City Schools, with others from area districts. Willard native Don Moore's military art is showcased at the Art Junction in New Haven at 2634 Prairie St. A reception runs Saturday Oct. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. Moore trained at Parris Island and served as a military illustrator.
