Willard firefighter Hartz named Firefighter of the Year

Greg Hartz of Willard Fire Department is named Firefighter of the Year for 2013. He has 37 years of service, organized fundraising for local charities, and helped reorganize the Willard Explorers. Chief Joe Reiderman notes his long service and willingness to help on calls, paid or volunteer.

Murray Reiderman Honorary Firefighters

During Fire Prevention Week two women, Jean Murray and Pat Reiderman, were named Honorary Firefighters for the Willard Fire Department, becoming the fourth and fifth non firefighters honored while 27 firefighters already held the title. Fire Chief Joe Reiderman said nominees must show merit and high involvement, and noted Pat Reiderman has firefighting connections through her family, underscoring deep public service understanding.

Tappel to head water maintenance in Willard

Willard City Manager Brian Humphress has named Water Plant Superintendent Shawn Tappel to also head the Maintenance Department. Council learned of the move after three months of Tappel managing both roles and noted no permanent maintenance chief since David Arnold’s retirement. Humphress cited tough economic times and said no layoffs may result from not filling the vacancy. The council also amended the wage structure for department heads.

Transportation director Michael Lillo urges parents to watch for buses loading and unloading to protect students. He notes nearly 10 000 motorists illegally pass stopped buses daily and school buses carry vast numbers of riders across about 5 billion miles yearly.

City council declines water bill adjustment request

Willard area businessman Daryl Wilson at 16 Myrtle Ave asked the city for relief on a $500 water bill, blaming a hot water tank running all weekend. He cited a past sewer adjustment after prior damage to his office and urged relief, noting similar prior city action. See adjustment on Page 5.

Plymouth council says cemetery and sewer funds improved

Village of Plymouth officials reported the cemetery and sewer operating funds are in better shape after recent actions. Finance officer DiAnn Jamerson moved funds to restore the cemetery balance while Rural Community Assistance Program guidance helped maximize sewer funds. An emergency fund balance of 45,000 dollars is maintained to cover three months of operations.
