Farmers among delegates to political convention

The Democratic convention in Atlantic City draws a large Iowa delegation led by Governor Harold Hughes. Iowa brings 50 delegates and 33 alternates including six farmers and several with farming ties such as Neal Smith and Elmer Carlson. Johnson is virtually assured the nomination, Humphrey among possible vice presidential picks, with farm policy and housing prominent at the platform and anticipated campaign themes. The Iowa State Fair and beef and pork shows attract major attention, with crop and livestock events and prize winners named as the convention unfolds. The piece notes heavy lodging use in Atlantic City, state political activity, and upcoming appearances by Johnson and Goldwater as campaigns ramp up.
