Prisoner Sets Fire at Local Jail in Morning Attempt
A 15 year old inmate on a forgery charge flipped a match into sleeping bags and other materials in the jail hall around 11:15 this morning. The small fire was quickly snuffed out by inmates and Deputy Sheriff Bob Swift and caused about $150 in damage.

Rites Wednesday for Mrs. Hebner
Funeral services for Mrs. Manton Hebner will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Theodore Schwartz officiating. Burial follows in Elm Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Hebner died Monday afternoon August 24, 1964, in a local hospital. She resided at 113 North Fourth Avenue in Washington. Survivors include her husband Manton M. Hebner and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be given to the YWCA in her memory. She was born Merle Johnson in Lee County Iowa, daughter of Wesley M and Loa M Wilson Johnson. She grew up in Keokuk and married in Washington October 13, 1913. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the 19th Century Club.

Five sticks of dynamite lit and ready to explode were found on the Fritz Stock Yards weigh scales near Washington. Tom Fritz discovered the cache and sheriff's officers inspect it for fingerprints. Lightning hits farm barn near Brighton in lightning blaze
A barn on the Louis Schwab farm three miles south of Brighton burned to the ground after a lightning strike reported about 2 am. A double corn crib granary were destroyed along with a manure spreader elevator and wagon. No live stock lost. A hog shed was damaged. Schwabs were away at the State Fair and notified. A tree near Mark Waggoner residence was splintered by a strike in north Brighton.
