Mobutu’s Congo Gains International Respect At Two Years
Two years after Joseph Mobutu seized power the Congo has moved from chaos to a more orderly state. Kinshasa is the capital renamed, a new constitution and monetary system exist, and corruption remains but stability grows. Critics warn of overreliance on pomp and power, while students laud his crisis handling and control of key resources. The central government operates beyond Kis- hasa, and rebels and terrorists have been subdued.
