Destruction and Fire at Anamosa Prison Uprising
Prisoners at the Anamosa men's reformatory caused damage and a fire during a morning protest that included a sitdown in the tailor shop and ramming of trucks. About 500 to 1,000 inmates joined the disruption, with a jeep chase and overturned equipment. Government officials urged accountability. Gov. Harold Hughes hinted at his own investigation. Damage exceeded a quarter of a million dollars. unrest also surfaced at Fort Madison.

Farmers Should Protect Ear Corn from Rodents
Bremer county farmers spent time growing corn and must guard it from rodents per County Extension Director Gene Vincent. Extension entomologist Harold Gunderson recommends shelling corn into metal bins or using poison bait stations with anticoagulant bait and antibiotic for faster kill. Bait stations must be weather tight and spaced no more than 10 feet apart, with trash removed to deter pests and stations kept full. birds and livestock should be kept from poisoned bait. Building plans are available from the county extension office.
