County Retail Sales Dip in Second Quarter 1963

Inland county retail sales for April 1 to June 30, 1963 totaled 336,800 with a statewide base of 5,687,900. Sumner posted a 700 increase while Tripoli fell 27,850 and Waverly declined 210,950. Other towns grouped in one tally dropped 98,750. non-permit holders rose 50.

Plan for apportionment defeated in polls county by county

The statewide apportionment plan failed with 462,655 voters voting yes versus 191,441 no. Bremer County favored yes with 2,033 yes to 1,881 no. Sumner 207 yes 246 no, Tripoli 222 yes 145 no, Waverly 393 yes 705 no.

Light 4-H Award Winners Return to Chicago Trip

Bremer county 4-H youths topped livestock judging earn a Chicago trip with four girls and four boys traveling by special train from Sumner and surrounding towns. The visit included the Board of Trade and the International Livestock Exposition. Chaperones Rob Wedemeier, Mrs. Kenneth Bach, and Mrs. Pearl Andee accompanied the group.

Tripoli Merchants Award 26 Thanksgiving Turkeys Wednesday

A large crowd joined the Tripoli Commercial Club's annual Thanksgiving drawing on Wednesday afternoon. Twenty six winners received turkeys with a one turkey per family rule. Community Chest Reaches 93 Percent of Goal in Tripoli

The 1963 Tripoli Community Chest campaign has reached 93 percent of its $2,530 goal, with $2,356 collected and on deposit at the American Savings Bank. Campaign chairman Raymond H. Bunger notes the drive ends Saturday to allow final donations or missed contributions, and donors may leave funds at the bank or with Bunger.

Five New Members Elected to County Extension Council

During November elections were held in six Bremer county townships to elect two year terms on the Bre mer county Extension Council. New members are Wallace Miller Frederika township Oren Briden Jackson township Gordon Card Lafayette township Ralph Albrecht Sumner township and Lorenz Lenius Washington township Mrs W H Heffernan was reelected in Douglas township. One election remains in Maxfield township to decide their representative on December 12 at 8 pm Readlyn Town Hall. The council governs the County Extension District and oversees the educational program of the County Extension Service.

W.W. Barracks of Bremer County hold their regular meeting and potluck dinner on December 11 at 6 30 PM at the State Bank in Waverly. Turkey will be furnished.

Fines Amounted to 342 In November Justice Court

Fourteen violators were fined in Justice of the Peace J. M. Haydon's court during November totaling 342 dollars plus costs. Violations include hunting and trapping offenses with penalties ranging from 20 to 30 dollars for individuals from Waterloo Oelwein Traer Tripoli and Waverly.

State Board of Control hires two men to study penal system

The State Board of Control has hired two veteran penologists to study Iowa's penal system. Dr. Garrett Heyne of Olympia Washington and Myr Alexander of Carbondale Illinois conduct the study. Heyne is director of the Washington State Department of Institutions and Alexander, former assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, now heads the Center of Study of Crime Decency and Corrections at Southern Illinois University.

Sumner Man Ray Miller Promoted in Germany Tour

Ray E. Miller son of Mr and Mrs Ernest J Miller R38 Sumner was promoted in early November to sergeant in Germany with the 42nd Ordnance Company. Miller entered the Army in 1960 and arrived overseas in February 1961. A 1953 Sumner High School graduate, he is serving as platoon sergeant. his wife Joyce accompanies him in Germany.

County Extension Workers to the Annual Conference

Bremer county Extension office stays open December 9 to 12 despite the departure of Extension Director Gene Vincent and Extension Home Economist Pearl Pardee for the annual conference at Iowa State University Ames. Office assistant Merle Yarrington will handle calls distributes publications and take messages. The conference focuses on changing characteristics and needs of Extension audiences with speakers from Missouri Stanford Monsanto and Iowa State University. County staff will consult with university specialists about county problems and arrange speakers for county programs.

County CROP Drives Nets 1835 Bushels of Corn

Bremer county's Christian Rural Overseas Program led by Rev. E F Puhlmann concluded Nov 23 with a carload of 1835 bushels shipped from Tri poli Chicago Great Western depot Tripoli in a brief service. About 900 bushels were donated by Faith United Church of Christ Tripoli and others who bought corn to donate in place of cash. Participating churches included St Johns Siegel 436 bushels St Pauls Denver 270 bushels Methodist and Baptist churches at Plainfield 202 bushels. Cash contributions by Faith United Church of Christ members will be tabulated this Wednesday evening. Haase and Petersons Visit Waverly for Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Ernest Haase returned Sunday from a stay at the Arthur Peterson home in Waverly where the Petersons were guests in St Louis. They were joined by Mr and Mrs Arthur Riekenberg also of Waverly. The Petersons stayed overnight at the Dale Drape home while the Elmer Riekenberg family hosted the Riekenbergs. Saturday marked the 25th anniversary celebration of the Elmer Riekenbergs.
