Blackness pared Him. Cuban ace Mendez shines despite color
The Enquirer recalls Mendez a famed Havana pitcher for the Almendese Club in 1908. He hurled five shutouts in succession against the Cincinnati Club and Key West teams with speed likened to Walter Johnson. The piece argues racial bias affected his recognition and value, noting color influenced opportunities in early American baseball.
