Quiet Monday wedding linked Miss Mattie Hightower and Mr Harrison Philpot. Other items note Mrs Ella Gazaway’s Augusta visit and Joe Gillespie’s burial Saturday. Hospital notices involve Mrs Fuller and Mrs Creasia Lewis Watson with update on Mrs Lillie Roberson’s condition.
The Tiny Club was beautifully entertained by Mrs. Alice Leland with guests Mrs. Harry Williams and Mrs. Edward Minnes in attendance. The Mystic Social Club enjoyed an Outing Sunday at the Y M C A Camp and the Argus Club picnic last Friday was a red letter event. A large group admired hospitality from gallant young men while officers and executive committee roster were listed. Mrs Gorgine Kelley Smith spoke at several Summer Resorts and Prof Albert E Smith with an Inter racial School at Poughkeepsie is noted as doing well. Credit is given to Mr and Mrs Harry E Allen of New York for a paper featuring photos of their apartments.
John C. Wright, Oberlin graduate and Tuskegee Institute alumnus, is selected by the American Missionary Association and the Brick Junior College board as president. He has long served in education, most recently leading the English Department at Tuskegee, and will assume duties September 1, with expectations of growth.
The closing of Porgy in London Blackbirds in New York and Show Boat in Boston sends familiar faces to Seventh Avenue as Chicago opens in late August for Ziegfeld’s planned run. Jules Bledsoe stays busy in New York while others vacation or perform at the Lafayette. Lincoln Theatre on West 135th Street shuttered by Schiffman interests, signaling a shift in theatrical policy.
A. F. C. Fiske claimed the company tested colored agents but found them lacking. Insurance experts rebut that the firm has not employed colored agents in 25 years and that competent Black agents have served well, challenging the次 remarks and asserting a race-neutral performance history.
St Louis report notes that C. B. King, president of Mid-West Life Insurance Co., announced the company obtained authority to operate in Tennessee and Arkansas. Branch offices will be established soon in Memphis, Chattanooga, Nashville, and Jackson.
