Wood fuel use in Nebraska reaches 908000 cords this winter

Nebraska families used about 908000 cords of wood for heating this winter, averaging 3 to 4 cords per home. Forester Clayton Watkins of the University of Nebraska extension notes much of the wood came from community projects and farms especially in eastern Nebraska along the Elkhorn valley. He warns soil erosion and slow reforestation unless trees are replanted, estimating 10000 acres stripped and 850000 seedlings planted under Clarke McNary Act programs.

The origin of these wild bands spurred speculation, with theories including Indian ponies and mares from emigrant trains, some said to carry Arabian blood.
