Herbert Wells Fay proposes a Lincoln memorial in Springfield featuring a 200 foot statue on a 300 foot pedestal and a surrounding memorial hall. The plan includes three circular galleries recording Lincoln life from cradle to Washington, with a panorama of letters speeches and documents and a center circle reproducing his birthplace and Kentucky journey.
Fay urges a major exhibit plan linking the state capitol, the tomb, and the Lincoln home with rooms displaying Civil War scenes, Lincoln portraits, and memorials. Proposals offer prizes for best Lincoln art and a boulevard connecting key sites to showcase Lincoln’s life and legacy.
The piece argues that the Washington memorial near Springfield costs nearly three million and impresses visitors, while the Lincoln tomb in Oak Ridge cemetery needs repairs and space for displays. It proposes a new, larger Illinois memorial hall to house Fay’s Lincoln collections and enhance the tribute.
Thomas Meyrick bought a chair for 1.10 at a Gettysburg auction. A card under the cushion claimed the chair was used by Abraham Lincoln during his Gettysburg visit and address. The card also said the chair was once owned by Judge David Wills, Lincoln's host, with a plea to save the chair. Bidders had paid over 200 for chairs owned by James Gettys, founder of Gettysburg, prior to Meyrick's bargain.
Historic chair once used by Abraham Lincoln in Chicago for a bust and life mask by Leonard Volk is copied for a replica in the Smithsonian. The chair also sat General Grant President Johnson Stephen A Douglas and other notables, and now resides at Douglas Volk's summer studio in Lowell Maine.
