God and Country Award Presented to Local Scouts

At the May 19 morning service of Locust Corner Methodist Church three Scouts Stu art Holman Jay Turpin and Wayne Stevenson received the God and Country Award. All three are church members and members of Boy Scout Troop 553 sponsored by Pierce Elementary School PTA. Rev W Wayne Coursin, the church pastor, taught the boys for over a year and the church official board recommended them after the board of review of the Protestant Committee on Scouting approved them as qualified recipients.

County Doctor Attends Hearing On TB Hospital Bill

Dr. Phillips F. Greene of New Richmond attends Senate Committee hearing on S B 317 to transfer the Ohio State Tuberculosis Hospital at Columbus to Ohio State University. Committee votes 6 to 2 in favor with critics warning of motives and cost.

Garden Tour Highlights Loveland Homes and Gardens

Five Loveland gardens will be shown on the Fourteenth Annual Garden Tours sponsored by the Federated Garden Clubs. The event runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday June 8 featuring Pine Acres Fallis Road Robin Hill Cor des Cedar Drive Stevens Tree Farm and a rustic ranch style home by Keeler.

Batavian Man Sentenced for Carrying Concealed Weapon

Phillip S. Gardner 48 of Forest Ave Batavia was given 90 days in county jail and a 506 dollar fine with half suspended on a concealed weapons charge. He also received 50 dollars plus costs for public intoxication and 100 dollars plus costs and 30 days in jail for resisting arrest after a March 23 struggle that cut Cpl. Richard Davis on the hand. The Courier will publish a single Memorial Day edition with noon Monday deadline.

County Farmers Reject Wheat Proposal in Ohio Vote

Clermont County farmers joined the nation in rejecting federal wheat production controls and price supports. 324 voted no and 222 voted yes among 566 eligible farms with 43 challenged. The referendum asked if the 1964 wheat crop would have strict controls and high supports or no controls and low supports.

Milford Student Tops County Eighth Grade Test Scores

Milford student Thomas Wetzel achieved the highest Clermont County score on the State Eighth Grade Scholarship Tests with 839 points, far above county peers. The statewide top 1 percent includes 24 eighth graders, 14 of them Milford students, with several others listed in the top brackets and multiple local names appearing in high score ranges.

Shamrocks 4-H Club Hosts First Outdoor Meal At Home

DAY HEIGHTS The Miami Shamrocks 4-H Club held its first outdoor cookery at Mrs. Raymond Diskete's home on Naomi Drive after school last Thursday. They prepared hamburgers, fried potatoes, gelatin with fruit juice, and discussed individual projects at a later meeting at Mrs. Walter Elliot's Cromley Drive.

Two Batavia Students Receive Scholarships

Two Batavia high school seniors receive scholarships. Roger Kilburn earns a $500 Honor Scholarship from the College of Arts and Sciences to the University of Cincinnati for 1963-64. Linda Van Hook wins a $600 scholarship to Our Lady of Cincinnati College and will study there this fall. Both are National Honor Society members. Linda is class valedictorian.

West Clermont Board weighs options to ease overcrowding

After the May 13 meeting President William Campbell led a discussion on shortening or altering school days to address overcrowding from a failed May 7 bond issue. Proposals included five and a half or six and a half hour days, split sessions, extending year or weeks, and potential twelve month operation with increased costs and lost state aid.

Local Students Earn Top State Honors Across Clermont County

Ohio Superintendent E E Holt announced 315 students statewide earned top honors from 26 176 participants in May 4 Final District State Scholarship Test. Clermont students Kathleen Bryan Patrick Hill Carol Shelly Mary Althaus and Susan O Connor posted top scores in biology English Latin bookkeeping and more. County commissioners approved bills and reviewed road conditions while a rummage sale planned by the Wesleyan Service Guild will be held May 25 at the Milford Singer Sewing Center.
