Batavia invites residents to contribute ideas for a grant project and join public meetings. The first session is Tuesday May 8 and the second is Thursday May 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the unity Meeting Room above the Batavia Post Office. Al Keller, Village Grants Coordinator, welcomes attendees.
The League of Women Voters holds a meeting on May 2 at 8 p.m. to weigh advantages and drawbacks of the Zimmer Power Plant opening in Clermont County. Public invited. call 831-6910 or 831-9027 for meeting location details.
The Air Force Band of Flight from Wright Patterson AFB will give two May 4 concerts at area high schools, West Clermont Career Center at 9 20 a m and Milford High School at 1 p m, highlighting classical to rock music with about 50 minutes of performance as part of community relations. Batavia also hosts a May 10 Flower Sale at the YWCA with orders May 1–8 and pick up May 10, a Glen Este Music Association car wash May 5 at two sites, and a Circle of Summerside United Church rummage sale May 4–5, all public events supported by Clermont Newspapers Inc.
A new half percent sales tax becomes effective July 1 bringing Clermont County to 4.5 percent. Petitions require about 5000 signatures or ten percent of governor voters. funds begin Sept 20 monthly. County faces over 12 million in facility needs and debt limits under $200,000 unvoted, with potential bonding from local properties. Administrative and architectural planning underway for a medical social services complex and court space.
Weekend visitors enjoyed East Fork Lake State Park as boating resumes with two of three ramps open. Bridle trails suit hiking and horseback riders while picnickers and sightseers filled the beach area. Future campgrounds north of the lake near Old SR 32 are under construction awaiting electrical work.
A Clermont County program informs shoplifters about the seriousness of offenses and offers four week educational or sixteen week counseling tracks at the Clermont Mental Health Center in Batavia. Mrs West notes many offenders are first time misdemeanants, while second offenses can be felonies, with progress monitored by judges and court records.
Two letters from attendees at Clermont Mental Health Center Bata via sessions on shoplifting describe the experience as traumatic and shameful. One writer recalls Christmas shopping, pocketing items, being confronted by store staff, and facing court. They recount fear, embarrassment, and a pledge not to steal again after legal consequences and family support.
