Amelia village origins and early settlers in Clermont County
Amelia grew from Lytle’s 1793 survey of a 1000 acre grant for Robert Gibbons into a settlement known as Milltown and later Milton. Early residents include Zachariah Chapman, David Jernegan, Shadrech Lane, William Weaver, Isaac Short, and William Watkins from Maine and Massachusetts. The area saw Yankee settlement with Captain Martin Pease from Martha’s Vineyard, and settlers from New Hampshire and New England. Sawmills and grist mills, plus early families such as the Butlers, Jernegans, Offutts, and Mellen, helped form the village around the 1812 mills and the Amelia Methodist Church site. The town eventually adopted the name Amelia after its mills and settlement patterns.
