Retroactive tax break eyed by House panel in 750 exemption

UPI reports Rep. Charles Vanik says the House Ways and Means Committee may raise personal income tax exemptions to 750 per person and make them retroactive to Jan 1, 1971. The panel aims to set 750 by Jan 1, 1972, with a minimum standard deduction hike from 1000 to 1400.

Saigon Faces Rising Violence As Students Clash With Police

In Saigon, anti government and anti American protests erupt across four districts marking a week of violent clashes. Militant students attack police at two campuses and firebomb an American car near a third. two students are seriously wounded. National Assembly deputies rally against President Thieu but police disperse them with tear gas and concussion grenades. At Van Hank University roughly 100 students denounce compulsory ROTC training and Thieu's presidential candidacy amid rock throwing and fires.

Probe of OU affairs ends with no charges

A state grand jury in Athens rejected indictments after hearing 30 witnesses in an Ohio University probe. Judge Howard Goldsberry dismissed the panel after deliberating about 2 1/2 hours with no explanation. The inquiry focused on alleged conflicts of interest involving OU Fund trustees and real estate and insurance dealings.

Hugo Black ends 34-year career on Supreme Court

Israelis Hit Back Planes Raid Across Suez

Israeli warplanes attacked Egyptian ground forces along the Suez Canal in the first such action since the cease fire began. Both sides reported the attack near the canal east bank with Israeli jets returning fire from Egyptian antiaircraft batteries. Egypt claimed no casualties occurred. Egypt said it shot down an Israeli transport plane yesterday, killing seven of eight crew, while Israel said it was a military aircraft inside Israeli territory. Diplomatic chatter in Cairo said Egypt would seek U.N. endorsement for Gunnar V. Jarring's peace initiative.

Security keeps game night safe

Extensive security at Ely Stadium credited with peace at the West Tech football game. Police reported three minor incidents, two prior assaults, and one auto window smash. Peak security included Elyria officers, Civil Defense, and REACT, with on-site patrols and wide radio coverage.
