President Nixon signals a selective post freeze program targeting major industries with teeth to restrain wages and prices. Governors favor indefinite restraints, Cost of Living Council shapes Phase 2, while Vietnam China Attica and Muskie remarks also feature as context.
Joseph A. Wisnieski, 52, a maintenance man for the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., died at Lorain St. Joseph Hospital after a freight elevator cage was breached when a lift truck moving on the seventh floor plunged through the gate and shaft, striking his elevator cage. The other worker involved was unnamed.

The Senate rejected a tabling motion to block a two year extension of the military draft and to add an April 1 withdrawal deadline. President Nixon led administration forces urging passage while Stennis warned against further delay risking national tragedy. A filibuster and further debate loom as opponents seek no draft.
A military judge in MCPHERSON GA reduced or dropped 101 of 102 murder specifications against Capt. Ernest L. Medina in the My Lai massacre case. The judge narrowed the count to involuntary manslaughter for permitting troops to kill 100 people.
Elyria officials decline to reveal safety details for the Elyria High versus Cleveland West Tech game at Ely Stadium. Safety Director James T. Tracey said more than 30 officers will guard the event and more than 15 patrol cars will be deployed. He did not disclose sources for the additional vehicles.
The Director said police chief and school officials approved a plan to reduce roving gangs after games. Police will deploy 18 to 20 inside and about 30 outside the stadium, with residents asked to keep porch lights on 9 to 10 45 p.m. and volunteers to monitor youths. Dr Thomas Showalter notes extra staff at gates and seating rules will be enforced to manage crowds.
The Amherst School System is under a preliminary Ohio Education Association investigation set for Sept 30 after complaints by the Amherst Teachers Association. ATA cites failure to negotiate in good faith by Supt Clayton Smith and the school board, with issues over a 5% pay rise rejected for a 3% increase and delayed raises amid a price wage freeze.
Ohio Governor John J. Gilligan declares the U.S. in the worst economic crisis since the 1930s and says Nixon's wage price freeze is a mere time out. He calls for revenue source sharing between federal and state governments and criticizes Washington leadership while addressing Attica prison riots and reform steps in Ohio. He urges restraint in the use of force and notes a planned visit back to Ohio with a flea market event listed for Saturday September 18.
