Officials seek shelter and aid for Elena victims on Gulf Coast
Emergency officials pursue shelter for hurricane survivors as dusk to dawn curfews stay in effect along the Gulf Coast. Lantern fuel ice and gasoline are in high demand amid widespread power outages with about 17,390 damaged dwellings across Mississippi Alabama Louisiana and Florida. Mississippi Gov. Allain seeks federal disaster aid and state lawmakers consider up to 12.5 million to match it. Local officials warn damage may exceed past storms while efforts focus on housing and rapid recovery as debris slows access to hardest hit areas.
