Funeral for DeChants Draws Mourners in Avon

AVON The church of St Mary of the Immaculate Conception overflowed with 70 to 80 mourners for Leon ard and Arlene DeChant slain in their home Saturday. Their son Greg DeChant, 21, survived with stab wounds, under police guard at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Police termed it a burglary attempt, with attackers possibly teenagers. investigators gather details while denying a link to a separate Shaker Heights murder. The DeChants were to be buried at St Mary Cemetery on Stoney Ridge Road after Mass.

Vermilion bridge repair date set for May 30 1986

Governor Richard F. Celeste fixed the completion date for Vermilion Liberty Avenue bridge work. The project will raise the west end 9 inches and the east end 7 inches, with state spring work to begin and city officials awaiting an official start. Mayor Hobart Johnson received a governor’s letter.

Ambulance pact approved by Elyria council 8-1 vote

Elyria City Council approved a 12 month contract with Lorain Area Ambulance Service for advanced life support at 300 dollars resident and 90 dollars basic service. The plan includes two ambulances at Elyria Memorial Hospital with a 10 minute response in most calls and a city subsidy of 78 thousand dollars.

West Park pool to open next June after new build

Elyria plans a new L shaped West Park pool with a $160,000 contract to Twin Custom Pool Inc. Construction begins this month and is due to finish by January. The pool closed this summer after a wall risk. A water slide was dropped to save about $33,000. The project is part of a $2.5 million neighborhood parks program financed by borrowed funds. Council also hired Richland Engineering Ltd. up to $95,000 to assess the deteriorating Washington Avenue bridge for replacement or rehabilitation.
