Pack Meeting Theme Aims at American Folklore

SOUTH AMHERST Cub Scouts at the school Thursday evening plan an American Folklore themed Pack Meeting. The building opens at 7 15 with the flag ceremony led by Den 1 under Mrs Lewis Kummer. Ten committee members met Monday to outline November plans.

Halloween Parade and Scout Rally at South Amherst

South Amherst hosts a joint Halloween Parade and Boy Scout rally tied to Midview area schools. Principal Earl B. Walsh leads a democratic youth program with den meetings, badge work, and tours to local factories. Events include a Nov 17 committee meeting, Dec 15 gathering, Dec 18 pack meeting, and a football game fundraiser at Fire Station 76 with chicken barbecue proceeds to equipment purchases.

Wilda Taylor Wins First In Pinochle

Members of the Pinochle Club met at Mary Kirkpatrick's home with guest Mrs. Berth Adams. Wilda Taylor won first prize, Janie Larson received travel prize, and Helen Grabovac earned the low prize. A salad course was served. Next meeting set for October 15 at Janie Larson's home.

Progressive Club Meeting Is Monday Transition Period Vital

The Gratton Kiwami Club president urges focus on youth in the school transition from elementary grades to senior high. A junior high helps gradual change to secondary units and better preparation. Walsh hopes a dedicated junior high building would free elementary space and boost opportunities. He lists memberships in state and national education groups. Oberlin Women’s Progressive Club to meet Monday at 730 pm at Gladys Wiggins home with Graf to speak, Rev. Steen to preside.

Council Accepts Sewer Bond Bid

Oberlin city council in adjourned session accepted Fahey Clark & Co of Cleveland for Lorain Street Sewer bonds at 89 713 dollars. Auditor Wallace Smith said the bid of three and three fourths percent plus a 1013 dollar premium was the best among several bids.

Oberlin officials report most mains in poor condition after a city water system audit. The plan shows hydrants updated, service work completed, and valves replaced while a Korean War veterans payment update notes 919,492 in Ohio benefits and pending claims.

Pushing Columbia UF Drive Aided by Local Volunteers

About 50 workers canvass Columbia Town­ship residents this week to boost United Fund. led by Mrs. Lyman Hitchcock and Mrs. Clenden Bishop. Data show 122 boys in Cub or Boy Scouting, 119 girls in Girl Scouting, two families aided by Family Service, 400 used YMCA facilities, 191 used Red Cross services, and 114 children attended the summer playground funded by the United Fund.

Clergymen plan sessions at Apple Creek State Hospital

Area clergy from five states will attend a series of three instruction sessions at Apple Creek State Hospital Massillon for those who completed a clergy training course. The first session is Nov 3 at 9 15 a m with follow ups Jan 12 and Feb 9 1959. Topics include practical retardation psychosomatic distress and pastoral counseling in mental institutions.

Butler Sworn In as Chief of Kipton Village Police

Waldo Butler, a local businessman and former Camden Township constable, was sworn in Monday as Kipton village's first police chief. The village approved the appointment unanimously and his duties began last night. The clerk reported $2,700 from Camden Township gas taxes, with another check expected, as Mayor Miles announced a village clean-up set for Saturday, November 1.

Spencer 4 H Club Night Set Friday

Spencer 4 H Club will present an achievement program Friday at 7 30 p m at Spencer School to close the 1938 4 H season. Seventy two members completed 98 projects in home making gardening annuals and planticulture. Ann Cooper won in Let Sew division and State Fair display. Bruce Blake spoke on beekeeping.
