Wellington Dairy Industry Story of Lorain County

The History of Wellington notes the glacier era soil like clay loam that fostered a thriving dairy business led by R A Horr who built the first cheese factory in Lorain County. Wellington became a major cheese shipping point with firms like Harr Warner Co Baldwin Laundon Co and George W Crosier Co among others. By 1578 over four factories operated locally with exports to England and Europe, shipping over 6.4 million pounds of cheese and 1.19 million pounds of butter worth about 860 thousand dollars. As transport improved milk sales rose, the cheese business declined and Telling Bell Vernon Co led several milk companies competing for output. A large frame building near the village was destroyed by fire during a strike about 18 years ago, later rebuilt as a fireproof collecting station. Holstein breeding and sales grew as a major local industry. (To Be Continued) Simms, Wednesday evening. Continued notes cover local social visits among Simms and Penfound families, with Elyria and Oberlin connections.
