City hall remodeling authorization, estimated at twenty thousand dollars, expected to pass by council Monday. Bonds to finance the work will be paid from revenue within limits, not by a local tax levy. Work includes moving water and police departments to the first floor and redecorating interiors, with bidding likely in December if approved.
The National Tube Company plant at Lorain will boost blast furnace and Bessemer converter activity while reducing pipe mill output. Four blast furnaces will operate, first time in over three years, with the lighted fourth furnace now in production. The Bessemer converter will shift to triple turn next week due to the added furnace. Rail mill resumes Sunday for six days. no skelp mills operate. In Ann Arbor Michigan two campus explosions left one man dead and another injured. George F Drasin 23 a graduate engineering student from Grand Rapids died when an alcohol drum he was welding exploded. Frieda Kaufman 17 of Chicago suffered facial cuts and possible loss of sight. A postmortem for Drasin was scheduled and an inquest set for the following Tuesday.
Radio schedule lists Father Coughlin at :00 on WLW and WGAR, Senator Vandenburg at :30 on WHK, Jones A Reed at :30 on WGAR, John L. Lewis at 10:00 on WGAR, and Harry Hopkins at 10:30 on WGAR.

Vernon Banister 58 of Belden died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a Wednesday night crash near Valley City when a Knapp driven car blinded by headlights struck a tree. Banister, a well driller, left a son Quentine and two daughters, with burial planned at Belden.
Civil service exams to fill two fire department vacancies and one school janitor-fireman post will be at 7 p m November 5 in the high school building. Eligible fire department candidates must be 21 to 36 years old, at least 5 ft 7 in tall, with high school education. First year salary is 129 dollars monthly. janitor-fireman must be a licensed fireman who understands boilers and pumps, with about 114 dollars monthly. Full qualification details will appear in a legal notice Monday.
WAVERLY Ohio October 17 Sheriff R B Mercer said Howard Morrison twenty two Wyandotte West Virginia confessed to using ether to silence chickens before stealing them.
In London today a remote possibility stirred talk that King Edward could quit the throne in favor of his brother the Duke of York or even marry Mrs Wallis Simpson. Reporters noted the strain of duty versus personal life while Fort Belvedere hosted a weekend gathering as speculation grew about the future of the House of Windsor and the line to the throne.
President Roosevelt resumes re election push in New York delivering speeches in Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Rochester, Utica and Albany. A downtown Athletic Club was raided at 8 30 p m by Police Captain Corbett Southam and Patrolman Parker. They found pool tables ping pong boxing and a card room. Access required passing a front counter and entering a basement through two bolted heavy doors. Officers left without booty, convinced the place was hard to breach.
Elyria Chapter workers report strong start in annual Red Cross campaign. H E Agate led courthouse solicitation to 100 percent membership within a half hour of canvass. The chapter targets 2700 members with 39 teams across the city and townships. James B. Thomas chairs the Roll Call.
Gardner Massachusetts October 17 James Roosevelt son of the president says a constitutional amendment may be sought to make the NRA principles the law of the land. Worcester mass October 11 the Worcester Telegram quotes him as saying the president would seek such an amendment if reelected at a Democratic rally in Gardner City Hall attended by about a thousand people.
Martin L. Sweeney of Cleveland will address Elyria High School auditorium Tuesday evening at eight. The National Union For Social Justice sponsors the public meeting with J. A. Welsh presiding. Congressmen Don W. Harter of Akron and Senator Black of Alabama were listed but Harter is slated to speak in Akron that night.
Police seek a street car thief after Fauldine Alheit, motorman for Lorain Street Railway, reported a theft at 5 a.m. The car was abandoned between Stop 5 and Stop 6 about 30 minutes later. It was the first known case of a street car theft locally.
The American Federation of Labor issued a labor record of candidates with Roosevelt deemed favorable to labor. Landon’s record was not clearly favorable or unfavorable due to lack of comparable concrete bills. The federation scored John Mart er with 11 favorable and 18 unfavorable votes. Knox was unclassified as he had no attributable record. Excerpts referenced Kansas governor Alf Landon without noting his governorship. Continued on Page 2.
On October 17, Frank Knox sped toward Topeka to join Gov. Alf Landon for a final phase in the Republican ticket’s bid to oust the New Deal. Knox spoke in Missouri and Oklahoma, blasting the administration before a Tulsa crowd of 6,090, as a Kansas stop looms. In Lancaster, Henry A. Wallace argued farm votes are the GOP’s sole agriculture interest, contrasting administration and Republican aims and recalling 1932 lessons.
Earl Browder the Communist candidate for president told a rally at the Arena that communists support the Farmer Labor party but disagree with reliance on President Roosevelt. He blamed the forces of reaction for backing Gov Alf Landon, citing William Randolph Hearst, the Liberty League and Wall Street.
In Chicago on October 17, Norman Thomas, Socialist candidate for President, argued that credit for workmen's compensation, old age pensions, and unemployment insurance belongs to socialists rather than the Roosevelt administration. He spoke at a radio address, a Socialist rally, and a University of Chicago students' meeting.
