Hold Little Hope For Quick Peace In Steel Strikes

In Cleveland on May 28 Gov. Martin L Davey met with leaders of the Republic Steel Corporation Youngstown Sheet and Tube Inland Steel and the CIO Steel Workers Organizers Committee to push mediation in the major steel strike. Both sides remained firm on recognizing iron steel and tin workers as bargaining agents amid a standoff over the closed shop and check off. About 60 000 to 70 000 workers were idle as unions pressed for universal cooperation while corporations argued against broader recognition.
