Justice Dept blocked 1980 Home State probe
The U S Justice Department restricted federal prosecutors from pursuing a racketeering investigation against Home State Savings Bank and its officers in 1980, a Cincinnati Enquirer report said. The probe led to two fraud convictions for Home State as a corporation and refunds of about 800000 to 41 customers across 11 states. Federal prosecutors feared leaks could spark a run on the bank and harm the Ohio Deposit Guarantee Fund, which insured deposits and prompted the temporary closure of related thrifts.
