Philadelphia authorities faced scrutiny over a plan to drop a non incendiary device on MOVE headquarters. The resulting fire spread through a dense row of homes as firefighters struggled to control the inferno amid angry residents watching from the streets.
Three MOVE members were shot dead during a police stakeout gun battle at the rear of their Osage Avenue headquarters in West Philadelphia. The fire destroyed 60 homes, causing about 5 million dollars in damage as authorities suggested some MOVE members may have escaped.
Elyria officials negotiate with John L. Mother Industries to sell the Tappan Co. building on Woodford Avenue for 50 000 with a 25 year non sale clause and a guaranteed 200 jobs within two years. Mother makes tank parts under Pentagon contracts and non defense items for aircraft.
Two firefighters from a fireboat station saved Andrew West after he slipped into the Cuyahoga River while a man watched three children on a pier. Mulcahy jumped in and handed the boy to OToole who revived him, the rescuers said.
In Elyria a woman's missing ferret named Shallamar returned by himself after she placed a lost and found ad with the Chronicle Telegram. The pet scurried through the Dispatch Department and even slept in a conference room before being reunited with its owner.
