Fire damages Hi-Mark Plastics facility at Lake Avenue

A fire at Hi-Mark Plastics Industrial at 1885 Lake Ave caused light to moderate smoke damage and minor water damage from the sprinkler system. The blaze confined to several boxes along the north wall, sprinkler system largely stopped it. No injuries were reported and financial loss figure was not available.

Three Injured in Fiery Ohio Turnpike Crash

On the Ohio Turnpike east of Exit 7 three people were injured in a 1:05 a.m. crash when an eastbound car struck a disabled vehicle that exploded into flames. Driver Joseph Gonzales, 18, of Lorain, faced a DUI charge. his two 19-year-old passengers Ruben Montes and Brian Saltis also from Lorain suffered minor injuries. The cars rested beside the road after the collision at Castalia.

Lorain men questioned in early morning stabbing

Two men were held in Lorain City Jail for questioning after a stabbing in the 1600 block of East 25th Street. One suspect said he stabbed an intruder at 1625 East 31st Street around 3 a.m. The wounded man, Willie Burns, 37, had stomach surgery at St. Joseph Hospital. No charges filed yet.

Raids seize pills and guns from jailed doctor's trailer

DEA agents and an Erie County deputy raided Dr. John J. Poland’s trailer on Kelleys Island near Dwelle Lane, recovering 30,000 to 40,000 controlled substances and a 357 Magnum, two rifles and a shotgun. Poland, 65, is serving a 15 year term after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and receiving stolen property.

Lorain chief backs officers in 20 arrests at Lakeview Park

Police acted properly in arresting 20 youths for curfew violations after the park closed at 11 p.m. Mayor Parker said a prior warning policy was not followed due to verbal abuse by some arrestees. The youths, ages late teens to early 20s, paid fines and costs totaling 31 dollars. Parker supports the action and calls for strict park ordinance enforcement this summer. He also notes council will vote on a 100-person summer youth program under a 167000 dollar federal grant running June 14 to August 30.

Elyria Man Shot Three Times. Suspect Charged

A 23 year old Elyria man is hospitalized in fair condition at Cleveland Metropolitan General after being shot three times following a Tuesday night fight. Willa Bernice Kimbo, 39, is charged with felonious assault. The shooting occurred near Bond and Adams streets after a dispute with Harold Kimbo's son. A revolver was found on Mrs. Kimbo during questioning.

Ex-Sheffield Lake official sues over firing

Former Sheffield Lake finance director Genevieve M. Kline, named in a class-action suit, seeks due process protections for unelected appointed officials before firing. She was discharged May 6 after a closed council session called by Mayor Richard Ackerman, with the stated reason of communication issues and alleged political motivation. The suit seeks 112,981 for lost pay and benefits and damages for nervous and psychological distress.

Correction issued over Don Kelly misidentification at Chuck E Cheese story

The Tuesday report wrongly named Don Kelly as Don Rake, a Great Northern Mall official, in a suit involving damages of 100000 dollars. Ackerman, a Democratic nominee candidate for the 55th Ohio House District, declined comment and referred questions to the city law director. Defendants include the city, Ackerman, treasurer Robert Hamilton, City Council President Daniel Fragassi and six other councilmen in a Lorain County suit alleging improper firing procedures. The suit cites Ohio civil service protections and notes unclassified municipal directors may be fired without notice or appeal, arguing a constitutional violation. The case is before Judge Joseph Cirigliano with a jury trial requested.
