Elyria Tax Renewal Fails In City Vote
Elyria residents reject a five year 0.5 percent income tax renewal by 4699 to 3230. City officials cite needed funds for police and fire services and street repairs. Mayor Keys says the tax is essential. Gibbs argues voters want tangible benefits before renewed taxation. The current tax expires June 30, 1999, threatening budget gaps if not renewed.

With about 88 percent precincts reporting, the unofficial AP tally showed an 80 to 20 percent vote against Issue 2 and a 61 to 39 percent vote against Issue 1.
