Ohio voters reject penny tax and school bonds in Lorain County

Lawmakers aimed to fund schools with a penny sales tax and bonds for repairs. Voters statewide and in Lorain County defeated both measures by about 4 to 1 and 3 to 2 respectively. The outcomes leave Ohio seeking a new plan to fund disadvantaged and inner-city schools after the Supreme Court ruled current funding unconstitutional.

Elyria income tax renewal rejected by voters

Voters in Elyria defeated a 0.5 percent income tax renewal aimed at funding city services, with unofficial results showing 4,699 opposed to 3,230 in a 59 to 44 percent split. Officials plan to reframe the issue for November, warning of program cuts if it fails again. Mayor Michael Keys’ administration could cut grass maintenance, swimming programs, and police and fire responses if the levy is not renewed.

Betleski Beats Grunda In Tight Democratic Primary For Judge

In a crowded county race Mark Betleski defeats Joseph Grunda for Common Pleas judge by 11,744 to 11,670 amid a recount risk as the margin falls under 0.5 percent. Betleski is son of former Judge Adrian Betleski. Grunda is son of former county Prosecutor Joseph Grunda. Webber defeats James Deery 11,988 to 11,466 and will face Debbie Boros in November. Lilly had won in 1994.

Blair Keeps County Seat in Democratic Primary

Incumbent Betty Blair defeated Mary Jo Vasi’s pick Lillian Leach 13 213 to 11 673 to secure the Democratic nomination for county commissioner. Blair faced criticism over two sewer projects while backed by Auditor Mark Stewart and Treasurer Daniel Talarek ahead of a matchup with Republican Jack Baird.

Developers win in Avon charter vote setback

Avon residents rejected a charter amendment 1719 to 1109 that would have let locals vote on commercial developments over 10000 square feet after City Council approval. Drake the Republican state senator from Solon won 52 percent defeating Kenneth Blair and Richard Jeric to face U S Rep Sherrod Brown in November. Darrow the Democrat from Bowling Green captured 68 percent over Norbert Denner and will challenge U S Rep Paul Gillmor in November.
