Education Department proposal clears House committee hurdle

The House Government Operations Committee approved a bill to create a Cabinet level Education Department. The plan consolidates education functions from H E W and other agencies, with a federal inter agency panel to coordinate programs. The White House supports the move, while critics from AFT warn it could fail on the floor. The Senate already backed a similar bill with different program consolidation. The education department would involve about 16 000 employees and a $13 billion annual budget.

Senate debates purchase of Shah's four destroyers

In Washington the Senate weighs buying four destroyers ordered by the deposed Shah of Iran for the U.S. Navy. Supporters led by Sen. John Stennis argue each ship saves $200 million by not rebuilding, totaling about $1 billion in potential savings plus related costs. Opponents led by Sen. Don Riegle seek to cut two ships from a $2.1 billion arms bill, while proposing using hulls for future ships to save up to $80 million.

Talmadge attorney seeks to bar secretary memos as evidence

Washington UPI reports Sen. Herman Talmadge’s lawyer urged the Senate Ethics Committee to bar office memos allegedly by Allyne Tisdale, his financial secretary, from being used in disciplinary hearings. The memos may relate to how closely Talmadge knew of unorthodox financial practices tied to false expense claims and a secret Washington bank account used to launder funds.
