Elyria's Jack Matia Drafted by Raiders in Seventh Round

Elyria Catholic graduate and Drake University offensive tackle Jack Matia was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round of the NFL draft. Matia called the pick a relief after a long wait and noted Oakland has no other offensive linemen drafted, giving him a good chance to earn a spot. His agent, Richie Steiner, notified him of the selection.

Jobless rate climbs slightly in April report

The Labor Department says unemployment edged up to 5.8 percent in April from 5.7 percent in March while total employment fell by 670000 to 96.2 million. Declines hit adult men women teenagers whites and blacks, with blue collar workers most affected. Weather school schedules and labor actions may explain the dip.

Driver Ed coach killed in school car crash near Abbe Road

Lakewood High School head swimming coach Robert Neil Skinner, 53, died from head injuries after a driver education car skidded on wet Rt 611 near Abbe Road. Three Lakewood students were hospitalized with concussions and fractures. Skinner coached at Lakewood 11 years, winning Lake Erie League titles. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Fire damages 15th floor of Great Northern Towers

A high rise blaze on Brookpark Road in North Olmsted caused extensive damage to an apartment on the 15th floor of Great Northern Towers. No injuries were reported as residents were evacuated while firefighters battled the flames. Story on Page BI.
