Five escape injuries in Mount St Helens helicopter crash
A Jet Ranger helicopter carrying four USGS scientists and a visiting Indonesian expert crashed near the crater edge at Mount St Helens, but all five aboard escaped serious injury. The craft inverted in snow after being caught in a wind vortex and was left behind as a second chopper ferried the crew to safety. The most seriously hurt was Donald Peterson, who reported a scratched nose. The crew had been inspecting conditions on the volcano’s amphitheater slope during a routine data-gathering flight.
