Elyria High Class of 1911 Then and Now
The 72 member EHS Class of 1911, photographed before the Washington Building, faced a large commencement gap leading to diplomas awarded at the Rialto Theatre stage by Superintendent Comings. Irma Mennell Wise stood out among graduates who later farmed on Mennell Road and Rt. 303, with wanderings by horse, buggy, and streetcar as common commutes. The piece recounts family roots, further education, early teaching careers, and the long arc from gaslight to space age, with reunions in 1956 and 1961 and memories of classmate Agnes Ver Soy and Mabel Dehn, whose experiences intersect with local hospital history. It closes with the annual Strawberry Social at the Downtown Kiwanis, noting large crowds and community fundraising.
